283 Days to go

The Big One: 24 May 2027

The new Standards of Modern Zoo Practice for Great Britain take effect on 24 May 2027, covering England, Wales and Scotland for the first time. The 2012 standards stay in force until 23 May 2027 β€” so today you have just over nine months of runway. Zoo inspectors will be referring to the new standards when they visit.

πŸ”„ This countdown updates itself β€” accurate as of today.

⚠️ Quick date check: you may have seen β€œMay 2026” circulating for the new inspection regime β€” it's a very common mix-up. The standards were published on 24 May 2025, and they come into force on 24 May 2027 (last updated on GOV.UK, 20 January 2026). Good news: that's more preparation time than most collections think they have. Please use the 2027 date in any onward comms.

Part One β€” Get Inspection Ready

What's Actually Changing? πŸ”

The headline shifts we're helping collections prepare for right now:

🐘 Elephants

  • Long-term management plans plus an individual welfare plan for every elephant
  • Free contact management, the ankus and electric goads phased out by 1 Jan 2030
  • New enclosure size minimums land 1 Jan 2040

πŸ¦… Birds of Prey

  • Tethering beyond four cumulative hours in any 24 hours being phased out
  • New tethering requirements bite from 1 Jan 2030
  • Larger aviary enclosures required

πŸ™ Touch Pools

  • Fish, decapod crustaceans and cephalopods no longer permitted in touch pools
  • Remaining pools must let animals choose to interact β€” or stay out of reach
  • Expect close inspector attention here

🌍 Conservation & Sourcing

  • Clear, evidenced conservation measures β€” not just good intentions
  • New record-keeping proving how measures were met
  • Wild acquisition prohibited without justifiable reason

πŸ›Ÿ Don't forget public safety & resilience

Double-gated entry systems, lone worker procedures and appropriate firearms availability all sit within the new standards β€” alongside a contingency plan for income disruption of more than six months or forced closure.

Paperwork is the new enclosure furniture πŸ“‹

In nine out of ten mock inspections we run, the animals are absolutely fine β€” it's the evidence trail that wobbles. The 2027 standards lean heavily on written plans and records, which means a brilliant keeper team can still score poorly if nobody wrote it down.

  • Start now: records built over nine months look credible; records built in nine days don't
  • Name an owner for each standard β€” ambiguity is the enemy
  • Photograph everything β€” dated images are gold in an inspection file

Welfare you can see β€” and, crucially, welfare you can evidence.

Your Runway

The Nine-Month Game Plan πŸ—“οΈ

1

Aug–Oct 2026

Gap analysis against the 2027 standards. Honest baseline, no sugar-coating.

2

Nov–Jan 2027

Write the plans: welfare, conservation, contingency, safety procedures.

3

Feb–Mar 2027

Mock inspection with written feedback. Fix what surfaces.

4

Apr–May 2027

Final polish, team briefings, evidence file bound and ready.

Part Two β€” The Wild Classroom

Your Animals, Live in 30 Classrooms at Once 🏫✨

Education isn't a nice-to-have bolted onto a licence application β€” it's one of the four pillars the standards are built on. So why keep it locked inside the gates? Our Wild Classroom programme puts a keeper, a camera and a curious animal in front of schools anywhere in the country.

25

Minutes

The sweet spot for a live link-up: ten minutes of keeper talk, ten of live animal action, five of rapid-fire questions.

Β£0

Travel Cost

No coach hire, no risk assessments for the road, no packed lunches lost in a car park. The barrier that stops most schools visiting simply disappears.

365

Days a Year

Rain, snow or half-term β€” the Wild Classroom never closes, and quiet season becomes your busiest teaching season.

Crowned cranes: a showstopper on camera and a brilliant lesson in courtship behaviour.

What makes a link-up actually land πŸŽ₯

  • One animal, one story. Depth beats a whistle-stop tour every time
  • Let them ask anything. The questions children ask are the moments teachers remember
  • Give a job, not a worksheet. Name the enrichment, vote on the diet, design the habitat
  • Send a follow-up pack. Curriculum-linked, five minutes to prep, teachers rebook
  • Record it. One session becomes a library asset, a social clip and marketing gold

🌱 Bonus: it feeds your conservation evidence

Every session logged β€” school, date, pupil numbers, topic β€” is exactly the kind of documented education and outreach record the new standards want to see. Teaching thousands of children remotely isn't just lovely; it's evidence.

Part Three β€” Fill the Car Park

From Screen to Turnstile 🎟️

Here's the bit that surprises people: remote sessions don't cannibalise visits β€” they create them. A child who has met your lioness by name spends the next fortnight campaigning to be brought in person.

🎁 The Golden Ticket

Every Wild Classroom pupil goes home with a family offer. The classroom becomes your highest-converting shop window, and you can track exactly which school delivered which booking.

πŸŒ™ After-Dark & Behind-the-Scenes

Adults want the keeper's-eye view too. Small-group, higher-margin, sells out fast β€” and showcases the welfare standards you've worked so hard on.

πŸͺ΄ Grow the Green Story

Planting, habitat and horticulture displays are quietly one of the most photographed parts of any collection. Label them, theme them, and let them earn their keep.

πŸ¦“ Adopt an Animal, Properly

Attach adoptions to the animals children already met on screen. Familiarity converts far better than a catalogue of strangers.

Planting and habitat design: welfare enrichment that doubles as visitor spectacle.
β€œThe collections that will sail through 2027 aren't the ones with the biggest budgets β€” they're the ones who started early, wrote it down, and made education part of the day job.” β€” Animal Insights Consultancy Ltd

Part Four β€” The Finish Line

The Onsite Visit & Your Certificate πŸ…

Everything above builds to one thing: an expert walking your site, seeing it as an inspector would, and confirming you're ready. Here's how the final stage works.

A

Pre-Visit Review

We read your plans, records and policies before we arrive β€” so the day itself is spent on site, not on paperwork.

B

The Onsite Day

A full walk-round against the 2027 standards: enclosures, safety systems, records, education delivery and team knowledge. Friendly, thorough, no surprises.

C

Report & Award

A written report with prioritised actions β€” then, once addressed, your certificate.
